Pontiac Land Group is set to transform Fari Islands’ energy landscape by targeting a remarkable 50% energy supply through solar power by 2025. The group’s forward-thinking strategy encompasses a substantial increase in solar energy capacity, which is projected to triple to an impressive 6.4 megawatts peak (MWp) by the target year. This expansion is part of Pontiac Land Group’s long-term vision aimed at achieving net zero emissions.
One of the key components of this solar initiative is the implementation of a floating solar system, which is anticipated to supply approximately 24% of the islands’ total energy needs. This innovative solution involves the installation of 40 platforms, each equipped with 2,160 photovoltaic (PV) panels. The floating solar technology not only maximizes energy production by utilizing space on the water’s surface but also minimizes the ecological footprint that traditional ground-mounted solar farms might impose on the delicate island ecosystem. Scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2025, this project represents a significant leap towards sustainable energy practices within the Maldives.
Existing solar initiatives on Fari Islands have laid a solid foundation for this ambitious expansion. The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, for example, has a total solar capacity of 983 kWp, while Patina Maldives boasts a capacity of 2,994 kWp. These resorts have successfully harnessed solar energy to meet a substantial portion of their energy demands during daylight hours, showcasing the viability and effectiveness of solar technology in the region.
